General Notes |
| |
Situated in Villabuena in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, Bodegas Luis Cañas is ideally placed to make great wine. Careful work in the vineyards and in the winery ensures that this potential is optimised. Producing around 1.5 million bottles per year the estate controls 120 hectares of vineyards and holds ISO 9002 for the winery and bottling plant.
Luis Cañas uses around 95% of Tempranillo in most red wines blended with a small proportion of Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. Whites are exclusively Viura and are produced both unoaked and barrel fermented.
In the 2006 Decanter Rioja tastings, of over 103 wines, Luis Canas was outright winner, with best wine, and top scoring producer. In the IWC medals, wines won, Gold, Silver and Bronze - what more can we say! |

Vineyard Notes |

Fermentation temperatures are carefully followed to capture the best qualities of the fruit. French and American oak is used for carefully supervised maturation in temperature and humidity controlled cellars. Winemaking here combines the best of traditional knowledge and technical know-how.
Luis Cañas produces wines that have the typical elegance of the Rioja Alavesa, excellent fruit and wonderful, complex layers of flavours.
The area around Villabuena has broken clay soils over limestone on which Tempranillo ripens excellently. REVIEWS AND AWARDS
Decanter New Spain, April 2005
Doca Rioja Luis Cañas. A new departure for this well-established bodega, proving that old dogs ca learn new tricks and do them better, in some cases, than the pups. The name comes from the ancient vines, which only produce about three bunches (‘racimos') each, against the legal maximum of 10.
Hiru, 3 Racimos 2001 ***** Sumptuous. The epitome of new-wave Rioja. Winner of the Rioja trophy at the 2004 Decanter World Wine Awards.
