100 Most Exciting Wine Finds
Rioja Hiru 3 Racimos 2001 Luis Canas
'Very much 'new-wave' Rioja - dark purple, enormous power, concentration and fruit, extraction, and ripeness, but not overpowering with a hint of 'curry spice' on the nose.' By John Radford
'Beautiful fruit, very pure, soft and elegantly structured, supported by supple tannins to provide great length and finesse. A great wine by any standards.' By Tom Stevenson

First Taste
Luis Canas Reserva Seleccion de la Familia 1999, Rioja, Spain - 93 Points
'A rising star of Rioja, Bodegas Luis Canas lies in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa Region. This lovely reserva spends it's first year of ageing in new French oak, and has emerged in fine fettle. It manages to show both modern and traditional faces of Rioja. Beautifully balanced and delicious now, but with a promising future.'

Getting it White by Kate Ennis
Rioja may be renowned for its red wine but that hasn't stopped the region's wine-makers vying to win over white wine drinkers with their vinos blancos. Kate Ennis explains how they are finally getting their whites right.

Doca Rioja
Luis Cañas. A new departure for this well-established bodega, proving that old dogs ca learn new tricks and do them better, in some cases, than the pups. The name comes from the ancient vines, which only produce about three bunches (‘racimos') each, against the legal maximum of 10.
Hiru, 3 Racimos 2001 *****
Sumptuous. The epitome of new-wave Rioja. Winner of the Rioja trophy at the 2004 Decanter World Wine Awards.

Tim Atkin, November 2000
"The quality of Rioja is arguably better than it has ever been, especially at the top end. Wines such as…Luis Cañas (etc.)…have taken Rioja to a new level."
