From the 2006 vintage, all Michel Torino vineyards have been certified organic.
Salta province, in the foothills of the Andes, north east Argentina, is currently "where it's all happening", particularly in the most scenic region of Cafayata, situated at 1700m above sea level, basking in splendid isolation surrounded by desert. Vineyards are planted at over 2000m with breathtaking mountain scenery.
The vines get 350 days of glorious sunshine per year, however, at this altitude there is a consistent breeze to cool things down. This sunny but cool climate, combined with the rocky and sandy soil, plenty of mountain water, is an ideal environment for growing vines.
The vineyards are some of the highest in the world. The speciality of the area is the wonderfully scented version of the Torrontes grape, these are accompanied by Chardonnay, Purple-hued Malbec, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. |

Surrounded by a scenery of ancient vineyards, amidst the Cafayate Valley, the winery flaunts all the magnificence of colonial architecture, with wide large galleries by the attractive bell tower. Its origin dates back from 1892, when two Catalonian brothers, David and Salvador Michel, resolved to devote their lives to winemaking in this region. Later on, David Michel married Gabriela Torino , and that was the origin of this prestigious and well-known venue: the Michel Torino Hermanos Winery.

In 1925, La Rosa Winery was incorporated to the family firm, until a few years ago, when it was purchased by a winemaking group made up by the Santa Ana , Peña Flor and Michel Torino wineries, leaving the family aside from the company’s stockholdings.
Temperature extremes in the winery area make this zone free of viruses and therefore enable winemakers to obtain organic wines, without using any chemical products or preservatives and producing excellent wines. |
The wines represent excellent value for money, they're consistent and full of varietal character. The hallmark of Salta reds is their great intensity of colour, while the whites are fresh and appealing, especially the Torrontes.
Strictly speaking, due Michel Torino's corporate affiliation, the winery falls outside the perameters of producers featured within the classic Wine Porfolio.
However, due to the uniqueness of this quality driven winery, and the completenes of the verietal range of typically Argentinian wines, we could not ignore the place, we just love this producer and their product!

On their meteoric rise to international acclaim, the quality-driven Michel Torino winery has collected awards from Buenos Aires, Quebec, Italy, Bordeaux, London and beyond. Their wines are among the finest in Argentina, terrific value and have been well supported by our customers in recent years.
This Silver medal-winner (Buenos Aires 2004) is soft and approachable. It's mature enough to enjoy right away with its luscious dark plum, morello cherry and chocolate character.

Michel Torino, Coleccion Torrontes de Cafayate.
Classic-wineco.uk believes this wine is a stunning example of the adopted national white grape of Argentina; "Torrontes", spicy fresh tropical fruit character with a hint of lychee, a crisp finish. Less intense than Gewurztraminer, an ideal partner to oriental cuisine. It is probably the best, most affordable example of Torrontes available, great value.

Michel Torino Coleccion Shiraz.
The Coleccion Syrah is deeply coloured, supple and expressive with intense blackberry and pepper characters. It tastes somewhere between a classic Aussie Shiraz and a northern Rhone but at a price that sidelines them both.

Michel Torino, Don David Malbec Reserve.
Sourced from some of the highest vineyards in the world, where the air is pure, the days long and water (mainly from snowmelt) is abundant, this is a red of exceptional richness and purity. While the 2002 scored a massive 95 points in a comprehensive 'Wine' magazine tasting, the 2003, thanks to a magnificent vintage, is finer still and has already scooped Silver in Buenos Aires.
Dark and concentrated with aromas of plums, tobacco and minerals. smooth, mouth-filling, berry fruit flavours supported by nuances of fine, spicy oak. Very impressive and complex.

REVIEWS
Wine magazine recently awarded the Michel Torino Don David Malbec Reserve 2nd place and 95 points in their Argentine Malbec tasting writing "Nice intensity of liquorice fruit with good concentration ... modern, juicy, sexy wine ... a superb palate with length and sweetly toasted oak." Argentina is gradually doing for Malbec what New Zealand has already done for Sauvignon Blanc - redefining the style and creating sustained worldwide interest. "Malbec is Argentina's calling card. Nowhere else in the world, not even in its home territory of south-west France, does Malbec attain the stature it does here". Simon Woods, FT Weekend, 01/09/01
Customers may well remember the terrific quality of Don David 2002, so good that it came top of the Decanter magazine 'all-comers' tasting, beating many a more glamorous wine in the process.
