The Tannat grape is a rustic variety best known for its inclusion in the wines of Madiran, a region just south of Bordeaux. The wines produced from this varietal are heavy with red fruits and can be extremely tannic. It has been imported to South America by Basque settlers, Tannat has become an important black varietal here, often going by the name Harriague.
